A day at a park is exhausting: many hours on your feet, heat, queues and constant walking. Having the right things in your backpack makes the difference between a perfect day and one full of small annoyances.

Comfortable clothes and shoes

You are going to walk and stand for hours, so comfortable, broken-in footwear is the single most important thing: do not break in new trainers on park day. Wear light clothing and, if the weather is changeable, an extra layer or a thin rain jacket that packs down small.

Protection from sun and heat

• Sunscreen: you are exposed for many hours, even on cloudy days.
• A cap or hat and sunglasses for the outdoor queues.
• In summer, a small fan or a cooling towel helps during the hottest hours.

Hydration and something to eat

Drinking water regularly is key to lasting the day, especially in summer. Take a reusable bottle to refill and a snack (fruit, nuts, bars) for the restaurant rush hours, when the food queues shoot up too.

For water rides and bags

• A waterproof bag or a light change of clothes if you are going on water rides.
• A small, comfortable backpack: many rides have lockers or areas to leave it.
• A power bank for your phone: between photos, maps and checking wait times, the battery goes fast.
