How to avoid the queues at theme parks

Nobody goes to a theme park to stand in line, and yet queueing is what ends up eating most of the day. The good news: with a bit of strategy you can ride twice as much in the same day, without rushing and without paying extra.

Arrive before opening time

It is the most repeated piece of advice because it is the one that works best. When the gates open the queues are practically empty: in that first hour you can ride the most popular attractions with five-minute waits that will be over an hour by midday.

Head straight for the headline ride as soon as you are in, the one you know will pull the biggest crowd. You will have solved the hard part while everyone else is still coming through the turnstiles.

Save the most popular rides for the end

Mid-morning and mid-afternoon are the two attendance peaks of the day. If you could not make an early start, the last hour before closing is your best ally: plenty of people start heading home, families with young children leave early and the queues for the famous coasters collapse.

Take advantage of meal times

• Between 1.30pm and 3pm a large share of visitors is eating: that is a window with shorter queues.
• Eat before 1pm or after 3pm and use the lunchtime peak to ride instead.
• Bring a snack so you do not depend on the restaurants during the busiest hours.

Use the tools the park offers

Almost every big park has some way of skipping the line: paid fast or express passes, and free single rider queues that fill the odd empty seats and move much faster. On a busy day a fast pass can save you hours; on a quiet day it rarely pays off.

Choose the right day

The gap between a Tuesday in the shoulder season and a Saturday in summer is enormous: it can be the same park with half or three times the crowd. Whenever you can choose, go midweek and outside school holidays and bank holiday weekends.

A crowd forecast tells you in advance which days will be quieter, so you can plan the visit for the best date instead of taking your chances.

Have a plan, but keep it flexible

Turn up with an idea of what you want to ride and in what order, but do not marry it. Checking live wait times during the visit lets you reshuffle on the fly: if your next ride is at 70 minutes and another one nearby is at 15, switch and come back to the first one later.
