What a crowd forecast is and how to use it

When you plan a park visit, the key question is not only how long the wait is right now, but how many people there will be on the day you are going. That is what a crowd forecast is for.

What it is

A crowd forecast is an estimate of how busy a park will be over the coming days, usually expressed as a level or a percentage of capacity. It is the equivalent of a weather forecast, but for queues: it does not give you the exact figure for each ride, it tells you how much footfall to expect overall.

These forecasts rest on patterns that repeat: the day of the week (Saturdays fill up far more than Tuesdays), the season, school and public holidays, and the park’s special events. Combining those factors with the historical behaviour of the queues makes it possible to anticipate fairly reliably which days will be quiet and which will not.

• Pick the day: if you have flexibility, compare the coming days and take the least busy one.
• Set expectations: if you are going on a busy day, be ready to start early and use fast passes or single rider lines.
• Combine it with live waits: the forecast decides the day, the live times decide the order of your route.

Getting the day right is the decision that most affects your visit. The same park can have half or three times the crowd depending on the date, and no app is going to remove the queue on a Saturday in August. Choosing when to go, with data in hand, is what really makes the difference.
